Review: I have long, wavy hair, which I usually just air-dry and leave loose. However, it’s is a little too 1968 for the office, so this past year I’ve been trying to find an easy, chic updo to substitute. I picked up this hairspray to tame flyaways after seeing that Aussie products generally get good reviews on MUA. Overall, it’s a decent hairspray at an amazing price.
For buns and updos, Instant Freeze is perfect - a light misting is all I need to make my hair stay all day. I also spray a little on a disposable mascara brush and use it to get the baby hairs off my forehead. It doesn’t look white on my brown hair, although I imagine it would quickly become flaky if you used too much. One downside is that the hairspray definitely does not add shine, but since that’s not something it claims to do, it’s not a dealbreaker. If your hair is very dull, though, you might want to try another formulation.
It’s also nice for the few occasions I curl my hair, although not perfect. It can get slightly crispy to the touch, and the name is INSTANT Freeze for a reason! Other hairsprays allow you a few seconds of rearranging before they set, but this one just locks the style in place at once. You definitely have to be careful not to overdo it. Staying power is great, and my curls still move naturally. I’ve slept on it and it doesn’t make my hair look like a mental patient’s in the morning, either.
The price (around $3) is unbeatable for a 7-ounce can. For someone like me who only styles their hair rarely, shelling out big bucks for products is pretty useless. I also appreciate that Aussie (which, ironically, is owned by Proctor & Gamble) takes care that their hairspray formulas contain no CFC’s and comply with all state and federal clean air guidelines. Instant Freeze isn’t HG status for me, but it’s a solid, affordable hairspray that I can depend on for reliable hold.

Would I buy this again? If I don’t find something better at a similar price point, yes.
Would I recommend it? Yes.

Review: This polish was definitely a disappointment. I loved the color, which is - in the bottle, at least - grayish blue with a purple sheen. Unfortunately, the subtle purple shimmer didn't show up at all on my nails, but I still like the plain glossiness of the slate. Even with my shoddy manicure technique, it was ridiculously hard to apply, very streaky, and much less opaque than one would expect. I had to do three coats and even then it didn't look decent. However, I would have chalked this up to my lack of coordination if the polish hadn't started to chip and peel almost instantly. I used my Seche topcoat which has always worked like a dream, so I'm not really sure what the problem was. As you can see in the picture, I didn't bother to clean up the little mistakes on the cuticles because I knew it wouldn't be wearable by the morning (see the missing flake on the side of my thumb?). I ended up removing the polish an hour later.

The price is reasonable for a beauty store nail polish ($6), but overpriced for something that performs worse than a cheap drugstore color. It made me feel a little better that I got it for free as part of a promotion.

I do really like this color, which isn't a common shade (in my limited experience), and it did look nice against my skin. I might take the bottle the next time I have my nails done in a salon, in the hopes that a professional might be able to apply it correctly, but I don't think I'll attempt to use it on myself anytime soon.

Would I buy this again? No.
Would I recommend it? No.

Review: Simply put, I love this stuff. I used to work at a juice cafe, and this saved my hands from all the harsh cleaning chemicals and time in the dishwashing sinks. It's a very rich but light hand cream with a pleasant perfume-y scent and soft pink color. My favorite things about this hand cream - things that set it apart from the others - are how quickly it sinks in and how long-lasting its effects are. Most hand treatments I try result in greasy handprints all over doorknobs, magazines, or any other amusements I use to distract myself while the lotion absorbs. Mario Badescu's cream soaks in within a minute, which won my heart at once. It makes your hands very soft and leaves them feeling moisturized even after you've washed them.
The price is a little steep ($8 for 4 ounces), but it's so thick that you only need a tiny bit at a time. I've had this tub for a month and you can see how much is left. I like Mario Badescu's packaging because I think it's retro-kitsch, but some people think it's ugly or boring - just a matter of personal taste. The tub itself is easy to close even with lotion on your hands. I also like the scent, but even if you don't, it fades pretty quickly and won't interfere with any perfume you're wearing. The nice thing about MB is how generous they are with samples: you get three with every order, and a bunch of free ones if you fill out their online questionnaire.
I've given this to a friend who is a nurse and has dry hands from washing them so often, and now she's addicted too. Simple but effective, this hand cream is one of my (very few!) HG products.

Would I buy this again? Yes.
Would I recommend it? Already have!

Review: I bought this on a whim at the beauty store - I went in planning to buy Ski Teal We Drop, also from the Swiss Collection, but found it to be much more blue than the promo images showed. I bought this polish instead because it's stunning in the bottle, and I needed a good winter neutral (I think I own mayyyyybe five nail polishes?). It was $7.99, if I remember correctly. The color is lovely - a gunmetal gray with tiny sparkles that look lighter in bright light.
I have very high standards for nail polish, mostly because a) I'm cheap and b) I'm a spaz. Take a chimp, blind him, remove a few digits on his dominant hand, and then have him start mainlining Adderall*, and he'd STILL be a better manicurist than I am. With that in mind, the smoothness of a polish is important to me, because I can't handle ones that are tricky to apply. This went on very nicely - I did two coats and a topcoat of Seche Vite - although it did take me a little while to get the hang of it. In the future, I will either do two thicker coats or three thin ones, because the polish isn't totally opaque. OPI's brushes are always nice, and with the topcoat, the polish dried quickly without any streaking or pooling at one end of the nail. I did notice that it was very difficult to clean up the little mistakes I made, which is annoying.
It's been three days and still looking fine except for a little unevenness around the cuticles that's probably due to my amateur application. A tiny, tiny bit of tipwear, but nothing noticeable. Overall, the staying power is quite good.

Would I buy this again? No, only because I'm sure it will last until I'm beyond bored with it.
Would I recommend it? Yes.

*Just to be clear, never, ever, under any circumstances, actually do this to a chimp.

anyone else feel kinda guilty/sad about all the sheep that are gonna be killed to satiate the shearling madness that's going to explode this fall?

i'm not a vegetarian and i wear leather shoes, so maybe i'm a hypocrite, but for some reason i feel worse about shearling . . . maybe because there are so many warm synthetics that the vast majority of us (excluding those in siberia!) don't need fur anymore- we just use it for selfish reasons.

it's like the last semblance of necessity is gone . . . technically the protein in meat is somewhat necessary, and there aren't as many good substitutes for leather, but none of us have any NEED for shearling, so it's basically slaughter for vanity.

I went to the Barney's Warehouse sale today at the LA Convention Center. It was the last day, which means they take an additional 25-60 percent off everything. I always go and I usually find at least one good thing.

They had a great shoe selection this year, although it helps to have tiny or big feet (like me). I do wish they'd had more outerwear.

But it reminded me that clothing needs to have a function. I get so caught up in the fashion blog vortex sometimes that I think that sitting around taking pictures in a field wearing a minidress and monster platforms is realistic. It's a lovely fantasy and I adore the artists who create it, but it's not my life.

I work hard for my money, and I'm lucky that I have two jobs that give me more spending ability than most people my age have. But I also have to pay for school, and so, like most people, I weigh my "big" purchases carefully. Also, I'm just plain cheap.

So today, when I saw the baby blue Margiela cowboy booties, or the yellow-tipped Proenza heels, and those curved Nina Riccis- all in my size- my shoe lust took over for a bit. I even tried on the $500 Margielas (which were too narrow). I almost bought a stunning Balenciaga dress marked down to $200, which was flattering and also in my size.

But honestly, I'm not going to wear six-inch spike heels while I haul around 20 units worth of schoolbooks. I'm not going to assist my boss in court in a Balenciaga cocktail dress*. I would be so scared of ruining that fantastic Christopher Kane dress that I would never wear it.

I'm reminding myself that I want to be a curator, not a rabid collector. Clothes need to flatter your body AND fit their needed function. I'm at the beginning of building a wardrobe, but I have my whole life to find things I love. If I want to look at a pretty pair of shoes, I'll put a picture on my wall. If I'm going to buy those shoes, they better be gorgeous, comfortable, and well-made. If I'm debating over a big purchase, I ask myself three questions:

1) Is the price worth the quality and wearability?

2) Is this better than all the cheaper things I could get with less money?

3) Labels aside, would I love this if I saw it at Forever 21/Target/Wal-mart?**

What did I end up getting? Black Prada pumps marked down to $140***, a asymmetrical pure cashmere sweater good for snuggling in during morning classes, a $5 tee, and the fun of molesting Rodarte gowns and more Dries than I've ever seen in my life. Oh, and we met a woman in the dressing room with a bag full of loot and impeccable taste who used to work at Halston back in the day.

What's your shopping policy? Building a wardrobe or buying for now?

* honestly I was SO close to buying this. Eff you practicality!!

** if I absolutely love something, I'll still get it even if I can't wear it on a daily basis, but that's only happened once so far.

*** I'm not gonna pretend it wasn't fun buying shoes that came with two embossed Prada shoe bags. god forbid any lint touches those heels! Miuccia would have a fainting spell.

Don't Shoot The Messengers is one of my favorite labels to watch. The collection is a "collaboration between Berlin-based designers Jennifer Ann Gilpin and Kyle Callanan". The duo describe their work as being "inspired by detailed studies of Art Deco stained glass techniques and composition, mixing the rich textures of fine lamb leather with the lofty transparency and iridescence of silk. Leather is used to define the lines and contours of the body, while silk adds a sense of fluidity and levity to meticulously crafted forms".

The use of leather with silk to make softer shapes is a nice antidote to the seriously overdone bad-grrrrrl rocker look (not that moto jackets aren't great too). Gilpin and Callanan's skillful combination of structure and flowing elegance in a single piece is much more interesting.

i know they showed at Berlin fashion week too. i haven't had time to look at pictures of the show yet, but i'm really looking forward to seeing them.

She was kind enough to answer a few questions a while back- read on!

1) Why did you start blogging about fashion?
i used to have a rambling goofball blog over on the myspace (oooh, RETRO!) and my best friend was always like, just start a REAL blog. i honestly never really considered it, but she pushed me to do it, and so there you go. most of the stuff i post about is basically what i used to email my closest friends about. now i just put it on the internets for the universe to read.

2) How does the place where you live influence your sartorial choices?
i mean..i live in new york citayyy. it's sensory overload all up in here. it's realllly easy to hate on yourself and/or be a cliche in this crazy place so i try to avoid both by just doing my own thing.

3) What's one accessory or item of clothing every well-dressed girl should own?
RED TIGHTS. ok, well maybe not that specifically but i definitely think that everyone should have at least ONE thing that is borderline crazytown. something so bizarre that you almost won't leave the house but you do anyway because why NOT?? if it's possible, i like to always be wearing something on my person that cracks me up, whether its a cuckoobananas color combination or a belt buckle with a giant INITIAL ON IT. i just want everyone to refuse to be too serious about their LOOKS.
4) What do you think makes you different from all the other fashion bloggers out there?
umm...i'm a thousand years old? i wear an 80s charm necklace to the office and i'm almost 30? i have an undying love for mark ronson and chuck bass and tell you about it, often, with visuals? i think i have my own point of view on most things and on my good days i can be quite amusing (at least to myself).

5) What's the best fashion bargain you've ever scored?
chanel two-tone tights with interlocking Cs on the freaking ankles: zero dollas and zero zero cents. i'd say that's a bargain. (there are countless other thrift store loves but, i mean, right now nothing can compete)

would it damage my reputation as a pillar of the community if i said that this happens most nights? if i was to go TRULY out of character i would wear pants. THAT would be a shocking moment (i hate them!).

be original. just write about things you love (or hate) the way you talk to your friends and don't worry too much about being cool. it's just the internets, ya know?
